Girls Night mixes fun with health info

For the second year, Beaufort Memorial Hospital will host an entertaining and informational Spirit Girls' Night Out in Bluffton and Beaufort in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

As part of the hospital's Spirit of Women initiative, the Bluffton event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Hampton Lake, in conjunction with the monthly Pink Partini. The Beaufort event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Technical College of the Lowcountry (Building 12).

The free women's wellness fair will feature music, games, wine and hors d'oeuvres.

Girls' Night Out is presented annually by a select group of American hospitals participating in Spirit of Women, a national initiative dedicated to women's health education and community outreach.

This year's theme, "Your Best Health Is in the Bag" will cover breast care, nutrition and bone and joint health. To make it more engaging, the information will be presented in the form of games.

"Wheel of Bone & Joint Health" will feature a roulette wheel with various categories of questions. The "Ta-Tas Toss" will focus on breast heath. Women will answer a series of true or false questions by throwing a small pink bean bag into a cornhole board marked with "myth" or "fact." At the "What's in Your Bag" station, participants will have the opportunity to weigh their purses and learn tips for choosing and using the right handbag, and how to relieve neck, shoulder and back pain caused by heavy handbags.

To help women develop better eating habits, hospital nutritionists will set up a grocery store aisle where participants can choose what they feel would be the healthiest foods. Their selection will be analyzed for nutritional content.

Membership to Beaufort Memorial's Spirit of Women is free and includes invitations to events like Girls' Night Out and Day of Dance.
