Help cancer society with dinner, dancing, donations

A night of dinner and dancing can help fight one of the nation's biggest killers.

The American Cancer Society's annual Winter Benefit is Friday at the Harbour Town Conference Center on Hilton Head Island.

"We've all been touched by cancer somehow," said Dr. Lorraine Champion, co-chairperson of the event with Dr. Gary Thomas. "This is a way to help the American Cancer Society."

The event goes to help programs at the society's local chapter, which offers support groups and guidance to caregivers and patients, along with other services. The Mission and Services Suite on Hilton Head Island, as another example, provides computer access to cancer society information and fittings for wigs, bras and prostheses.

Organizers hope to raise about $100,000 for the society this year. Live and silent auctions will also be featured. Long-standing local band, The Headliners, will perform. Tickets are $175 a person.
