Haig Point, SC Yacht Club to share amenities

A Hilton Head Island boating club has reached across Calibogue Sound to partner with a private community on Daufuskie Island.

The S.C. Yacht Club and the Haig Point Club and Community Association will begin sharing amenities Monday.

Yacht club members will have access to Haig Point's restaurants and athletics facilities. Those include an equestrian center, 29 holes of golf -- including the Rees Jones Signature Course -- and a tennis club that won a Outstanding Facility Award from the U.S. Tennis Association last year.

Yacht club members can travel to the club by their own boats or by ferries that embark from Daufuskie and Hilton Head between 6 a.m. to 11:40 p.m. each day.

In return, Haig Point residents can dine and attend events at the yacht club, located in Windmill Harbour on Jenkins Island. They will also be able to enroll in the club's sailing programs, use club owned-boats and dock their vessels in the club's harbor.

Members from both groups met Thursday for cocktails at Haig Point to celebrate their new union. On Friday, they'll christen the relationship by breaking a bottle of champagne over the anchor of a boat.

"I think we're clubs of equal stature, and it's an opportunity for Haig Point to get some exposure and share some of the special qualities of the club," said Randall Page, general manager of the Haig Point Club and Community Association.

Page said the partnership will have "a very strong social component."

"We really see each other as sister clubs," he said.

Leslie Richardson, who co-founded the yacht club with her husband, J.R., nearly 25 years ago, agreed.

"I'm looking forward to the friendships," she said. "It's really like we're getting a sister club."
