Palmetto Electric Cooperative's renovated Hilton Head Island district office has earned gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design.
The building, which reopened in February, was designed to earn a silver certification, the third-highest level. Palmetto Electric officials called the gold status "a pleasant surprise."
The office at 111 Mathews Drive incorporates technology for efficient lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, according to a news release. It also features systems to collect and recycle rainwater for landscaping and other uses.
