Law firm hires Haskell

Dean Haskell has joined the law firm of Jones, Simpson & Newton of Bluffton and Hilton Head Island.

Haskell, who will focus on building a regional bankruptcy practice, is a graduate of the University of Maine and Western New England College School of Law.

He worked with John Curry and former Gov. John West on the Hilton Head Holdings bankruptcy and led the restructuring of companies such as Revco Drug Stores, E.C. Ernst Inc., McCrory Stores, and Rand McNally & Co., according to a news release.

Local businesswoman advances in contest

Marianne Ballantine, owner of Ballantine Environmental Resources of Hilton Head Island, has been selected one of 62 winners in a women's "business pitch" competition.

The competition, organized by the nonprofit Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence, invited female business owners with at least $85,000 in annual business revenues and that have been in business for at least two years to present their businesses in a two-minute pitch to a panel of small-business experts and judges.

Winners received a $1,000 American Express gift card, professional coaching and a chance to participate in the next round of competition for a spot in the Make Mine a Million business development program.
