Oh, brother, was it a fantastic Friday for high school football in the Lowcountry.
Hilton Head Christian kicked it off with a 49-28 victory against rival Hilton Head Prep in the matinee. Bluffton High School pummeled Hilton Head High for the second time this year and ended the night celebrating a region title by virtue of Cane Bay's upset of Berkeley. And Beaufort High ended its recent woes against Summerville with a 31-28 victory that legitimizes the Eagles as a serious contender in Class 4-A Division II.
I won't get too much into how big of a night it was for area teams here, though, because that will be the topic of my Sunday column. Instead, lets take a moment to check out a snapshot of the playoff situation, because the postseason begins Friday for every classification except Class 4-A.
I also won't go too far into Beaufort High's playoff outlook, because frankly, the convoluted point system makes my brain hurt, and it's impossible to know anything with certainty until the final games have been played. Just know that fine folks such as my pals PNutt, Penguin and jorschebft project the Eagles to have at least one home playoff game regardless of what happens this week, and they could end up playing two games at home, where they haven't lost this season. To oversimplify things, the Eagles are big Ashley Ridge fans this week.
