Doug Henderson got one step closer today to becoming the first opponent that incumbent Beaufort County Treasurer Joy Logan has faced in a general election since taking office nearly two decades ago.
Henderson dropped off petitions containing more than 9,577 signatures today to be certified at the county Board of Elections and Voter Registration in Beaufort.
To appear on the ballot as a nonpartisan petition candidate, Henderson must have obtained 4,720 signatures — or about 5 percent of the county's 94,393 registered voters.
Henderson, a retired banker who lives on Lady's Island, said he never thought he'd collect so many signatures.

"I thought it was going to be tough enough to get to 4,700," Henderson said. "In the first couple weeks, I thought, 'Boy, I don't know if I'm going to be able to do this.' It just kept spreading and spreading and all of a sudden, we were getting 500 a day.
"I still had people calling me today trying to sign the petition."
County election officials have until Aug. 16 to certify the petitions, said Scott Marshall, executive director of the Board of Elections and Voter Registration.
