A man Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies believe forged four checks amounting to $16,000 still eludes authorities.

The suspect is accused of stealing checks from businesses' mailboxes along Hunter and Beach City roads on Hilton Head Island, increasing their amounts and making them payable to "Anthony Thomas Settles," according to a Sheriff's Office news release Thursday.

The four checks were cashed on the same day, April 26, at several banks.

The suspect is white, 25 to 35 years old, has brown hair and glasses and was seen driving a dark, newer-model Toyota Camry.

The Sheriff's Office advises businesses not to put outgoing mail in unsecured mailboxes and asks banks to beware of any checks that appear to have been altered.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Lance Cpl. W. Conant at 843-255-3424 or county dispatch at 843-524-2777.
