Former sheriff candidate charged with assault in shooting

A former candidate for Jasper County Sheriff was charged with two counts of assault with intent to kill Wednesday in connection with a shooting Sept. 11 in which he and another man were hospitalized.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division says Joel O’Quinn, 45, of Ridgeland fired a .40-caliber Glock pistol at 49-year-old Rusty Spencer and Timothy Spencer outside the Country Kitchen in Point South. The restaurant was closed at the time, according to the owner, who said none of the men was a regular customer.L

O’Quinn is charged with shooting Rusty Spencer once in the buttocks, according to the arrest warrant. He is also charged with shooting at the vehicle of Timothy Spencer. Timothy Spencer was not injured in the shooting.

O'Quinn was released Wednesday from the Jasper County Detention Center on $125,000 bail.
