Improving literacy locally can be something as simple as spending an afternoon with the area's best chefs and authors.

Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry's fifth annual Cooks & Books is from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa.

The fundraiser benefits the Beaufort County literacy group that provides basic reading skills for adults and English as a second language programs.
