Lisa “Bernie” Bernstein hired an employee just to make donut ice cream cones last year because she was flooded with customers after the launch of the unusual treat.
This year, she has added something new to The Purple Cow’s menu — a donut ice cream bowl.
For $9, customers can order either the bowl or cone. Each contain a cinnamon sugar donut lined with Belgian chocolate. Then it is topped with ice cream.
“You have to line them with something, because otherwise the ice cream will seep through the donut and it would be a mess,” Bernstein said.
The suggested ice cream is “Utter delight,” Bernstein said Thursday. The vanilla scoop is mixed with chocolate-covered Rice Krispies, homemade caramel sauce and purple sprinkles.
The Purple Cow also carries eight other flavors of Hilton Head Ice Cream. Some customers have been topping the bowls with banana pudding.
Bernstein said she is unable to offer the donut options year-round because they are made in-house.
“They are very time consuming, and I can’t do it during the winter because there is no one here to do it,” Bernstein said.
The dessert will be available until at least Labor Day. It is possible they will run out daily, she said.
The Purple Cow is located at 95 Mathews Drive. It is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Starting Monday, the shop it will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
