Descendants of Lowcountry legend Smalls to speak at lecture

Historic Beaufort Foundation's Dinner & a Lecture program Oct. 24 will establish a living connection to Beaufort history. Family members of Lowcountry hero Robert Smalls will explain their role as his descendants in keeping his memory alive and share Smalls' impact on their lives at the Verdier House in Beaufort.

The presentation by Small's great-granddaughter, Helen Boulware Moore, and great-great grandson, Michael Boulware Moore, will enhance visitors' experience of the current traveling exhibit at the Verdier House, "The Life & Times of Congressman Robert Smalls." Under the auspices of the South Carolina State Museum, the exhibit will be on display in Smalls' hometown until Dec. 20.

Smalls' heroic exploits on behalf of Union forces in 1862 provided his entrèe into the U.S. military and politics. By the time he died in 1915, Smalls had served five terms in the United States Congress and was the dominant political leader in Beaufort County for 45 years. Smalls ended his career as Collector of Customs on Bay Street in Beaufort. In 2009, he was named to the South Carolina Hall of Fame.

Helen Moore curated the exhibit of furnishings, memorabilia and family artifacts, with the assistance of W. Marvin Dulaney, associate professor of African-American history at the University of Texas-Arlington. Retired as a psychologist and consultant in group dynamics, Moore received her Ph.D. from Boston College and was an administrator and lecturer at Simmons College in Boston.

Michael Moore is president and CEO of Glory Foods in Atlanta and has spent his career in the consumer products trade, including General Foods USA and Coca-Cola Co.

He will share his reflections on growing up with the link to Smalls and its impact on the next generation that includes his four sons.

Open to foundation members and non-members, the monthly lecture series features a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Programs are 6 to 7 p.m. followed by audience questions.

A three-course dinner at Saltus River Grill is offered at $19 a person for attendees at the lecture. Admission to the lecture is $15 or $25 for members and member couples, respectively; and $20 or $30 for non-members or non-member couples, respectively.
