For charitable grant

Bluffton Self Help gratefully acknowledges receipt of a grant from the Beaufort Fund of Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina.

The Beaufort Fund has reached its 13th year of awarding grants, providing support to many charitable programs and organizations in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties. Its financial support will help Bluffton Self Help finance roof repairs for targeted homes in dire need. These homes belong to working and disabled individuals and their families and seniors on fixed incomes. Without this assistance, these Bluffton residents would be unable to afford repairs and maintain safe living conditions.

Thank you to Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina for managing the Beaufort Fund, which helps improve the quality of lives of so many. We are proud to be associated with your efforts and mission: "Give Back. Look Forward."

To hospital staff

I would like to express a special thanks to Hilton Head Hospital and the staff (nurses and doctors) for how great my husband and I were medically treated.

We were on vacation in late February, and we had heart attacks five days apart. We were treated by the team of doctors from Savannah Cardiology at Hilton Head Hospital.

The hospital staff truly deserve recognition for providing us excellent treatment. Everybody's professionalism at the hospital - from the volunteers to the nursing staff - was the very best. And the team of doctors from Savannah Cardiology were truly lifesavers. I know my husband and I had fears about being ill and not back home in our own community, but those feelings soon left. We considered ourselves to be lucky to have a team of doctors who were the very best in what they did and whose demeanor made you feel it was going to be all right.

The Hilton Head community is very fortunate to have a great hospital, such professional staff and excellent doctors.

It can't go without saying that even though this wasn't what my husband and I had in mind for a vacation, we were very fortunate to be in a community that had an outstanding hospital, nursing staff and doctors that were the very best.

To The Bargain Box

As co-directors of Special Olympics Area 8, we would like to thank The Bargain Box for its generous grant supporting our programs, particularly tennis, in 2011.

This year, 63 adult and school-aged athletes from Beaufort County were able to participate in Special Olympic tennis. This funding enabled our athletes to practice, provided transportation to and from practices and events, and made it possible for our athletes to participate in area tournaments, as well as state games. Our local athletes also teamed with Special Olympics athletes around the country to compete in the National Special Olympics Tennis Tournament held in March at Van der Meer Tennis Center in Shipyard Plantation on Hilton Head Island. It was fun for all and a huge success.

We urge the entire community to support The Bargain Box by donating items or shopping for all of those great bargains.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

With supporters such as our friends at The Bargain Box, this mission can be fulfilled.
