Photography Club of Beaufort announces winners of Fall Competition

The Photography Club of Beaufort recently announced the winners of its semi-annual Fall Competition, held Oct. 10. Photographers Gary Geboy and Jonathan Dyer, of The Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet, and Jonathan Goebel, assistant professor of art at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, judged the competition. Criteria for judging included superb technical quality, composition and interest. Results of the competition are:


First place, Tom Valentino for "Egret"; second place (tie), Cathy Persson for "Zinnia" and Rebecca Bass for "Ossabow Island Boneyard"; honorable mentions, Tom Brady for "Looking for the Nest," Russ Dimke for "Botanical Soldiers" and Richard Matheny for "Taking Flight"


First place, Barry Wright for "Woman in Full Venice Carnival Costume"; second place, Suzanne Wolf' for "Buttermilk Falls"; honorable mentions, Ellen Corbett for "Early Morning Tranquility," Dick Golobic for "Yaquina Head Oregon Lighthouse" and Brad Mol for "Rwandan Brickmaker Girl"

The Photographic Society of America, a worldwide organization which promotes the art and science of photography, recently awarded the Photography Club of Beaufort with an honorable mention for excellence in website design at the annual convention in Colorado Springs. Richard Darby, the club's local web designer, accepted the award.

The club has more than 80 members. It meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at ARTworks at 2127 Boundary St. in Beaufort. The next meeting will be a critique of the club's yearlong assigned subject, "American Roots Music." There will be a corresponding Smithsonian Exhibit of the same name at the Beaufort library in December and January. Photos from this critique will be on exhibit at the library from Dec. 4 through the end of January. The public is invited to attend all meetings and the exhibit.
