Lukens celebrate 68th anniversary

Leo and Mickey Luken of Hilton Head Island are celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary Feb. 27, 2011.

They were married in Fort, Wayne, Ind., at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church Feb. 27, 1943.

For more than 40 years Leo was Production Manager for Zollner Pistons, which made pistons for the B-29 bombers during World War II, played fast pitch softball for 21 years, winning 53 consecutive games with an undefeated record of 12-0 in the world championship game and was inducted in the Softball Hall of Fame in 1993. An avid golfer, he has shot his age 816 times and won the inaugural Shoot Your Age Tournament at The Village in Florida in May 2006 besting Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

Mickey is an accomplished golfer winning 10 tournaments on the senior golfers group in Myrtle Beach. In 1942 she graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing as a registered nurse and was supervisor of OB floor, she played the violin in the school orchestra, won two debates while in college and was an expert seamstress.

Leo and Mickey taught ballroom dancing in their home for 23 years six nights a week while raising a family of six: Rodey Webb of Hilton Head; Patricia McDougall of Okatie; Kathleen Schenkel of Fort Wayne; Laurie Horn of Clarkston, Mich.; Lenny Luken of Fort Wayne; and Lisa Geller of Huntington, Ind. They have 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

After retiring in 1982, they moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where they resided until 2003 when they moved to Palmetto Dunes to live with their daughter.
