For a romantic evening of authentic Italian food in relaxed atmosphere, and warm hospitality by caring local owners, head to Bistro Mezzaluna in Fountain Center on Hilton Head Island. Guests can also dance the night away at this lovely restaurant. Owners Mark and Valerie talked with us recently.
Q. Bistro Mezzaluna has many unique features. Tell us about some of them.
A. Valerie: To my knowledge, this is only restaurant around with a dance floor. We feature a variety of music. From 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday nights we have smooth jazz, Broadway classics and standards by Teri Rini and Larry Kopp. On Fridays from 8 to 10:30 p.m. the band Target is a lively local favorite for Motown and shag. On other nights we have musicians playing our grand piano for easy listening from 7 to 9 p.m.
Q. The restaurant is known for its hospitality and friendly atmosphere.

Valerie: This is the type of restaurant where a single man or woman can come in, sit in the bar area and have a martini, wine or cocktail, eat dinner or order off our bar menu during happy hour and feel comfortable. It's fun, like an Italian "Cheers!" Mark and I meet, greet and try to get to know our customers.
Q. What other services do you offer?
Mark: We offer luncheons for groups of 20 or more, family reunions, wedding rehearsals, and catering.
In addition to our regular and famous sunset menu, we have a bar menu and children's menu. We also have a wine menu. Everything is prepared to order, even the pasta fajoli and minestrone soups.
Valerie: We also have vegetarian and gluten-free dishes including pasta primavera, eggplant parmesan and gluten free pasta. We can make most entrees gluten free.
Mark: By popular demand, in October we will be offering a la cart petite portions of many of our regular menu entrees for smaller appetites, and so our guests may also enjoy an appetizer or dessert.
Valerie: Our goal is to serve great food, in a wonderful atmosphere and provide first class service by caring owners. That's what makes us special.
Q. Tell me about your mouth-watering lasagna.
Mark: It's made with lots of love! We use a mixture of beef, Italian sausage and veal layered with fresh ricotta, parmesan and mozzarella.
Q. This Surf and Turf Bruschetta is creative--I love the sauce. What's in it?
Mark: It's a light basil cream sauce over crustinis, bruschetta, bite-sized pieces of grilled shrimp and beef tenderloin topped with balsamic vinegar.
Q. Bistro Mezzaluna is great place for a date. How did you create the romance?
Valerie: Soft lighting, terraced seating and a modern yet old-world feel, ceiling fans, sky lights, a dance floor and a wonderful patio for outdoor dining under the stars.
