Since 1995, the Beaufort Garden Club has celebratedNational Garden Week-the first full week of June eachyear-by inviting visitors and area residents to the club's"Garden a Day" tour. The annual event gives the publican opportunity to visit private gardens rarely open forview.
This summer, the club's 17th annual event will beheld June 6-10. The gardens are open from 9:30 a.m. to12:30 p.m.
"Garden a Day" was the inspiration of Marion Leach,a Beaufort Garden Club member. Each year, attendancehas increased; The 2010 "Garden a Day" attracted morethan 1,200 visitors.
Five homeowners will open their gardens, includingone in the historic district, to the public. Master Gardenersfrom the Lowcountry Master Gardener Associationwill be on hand to answer questions (look for their greenaprons). Light refreshments will be served.
In the garden on North Hermitage Road, a lifelonglove affair with statuary shows in the many life sizesculptures. On Port Republic Street, the sound of wateris a grace note for the lush foliage in a lovely garden.One garden this year is on Cat Island, where a columnedpergola showcases gorgeous waterfront property.
