Beach regulations

  • The stretch of beach under town of Hilton Head Island jurisdiction extends from the southern shores of Fish Haul Creek (Port Royal Sound) southward to Calibogue Sound. Violations of any regulations could lead to fines of more than $1,000.
  • Animals on the beach must be on a leash between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from April 1 through the Thursday before Memorial Day, and after Labor Day to Oct. 1. Animals are not permitted on the beach between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from the Friday before Memorial Day through the Monday of Labor Day weekend. From Oct. 1 to March 31, dogs and other animals must be on a leash or under positive voice control. Owners are required to pick up and dispose of their animal's waste.
  • Alcoholic beverages are not allowed, nor are glass containers or motorized vehicles, except wheelchairs.
  • During the summers, federally protected loggerhead sea turtles nest on island beaches. If you encounter one of these creatures, leave it alone. Do not shine any lights on or around the turtle. If you encounter a nest or hatchling turtles, leave them alone. If you encounter people disturbing these animals, contact town officials.
  • Leave sand dollars, starfish and hermit crabs in the water after you look at them. This is their home.
