Motorists traveling from Hilton Head Island to the mainland met an unexpected delay Monday.
Traffic was reduced at times to one lane on William Hilton Parkway, from Squire Pope Road to the Crazy Crab restaurant, as crews poured concrete as part of an S.C. Department of Transportation project to repair sidewalks.
The work began at 9 a.m. and was finished at about 2:30 p.m.
No more lane closures associated with the project are expected, according to the DOT.
Town traffic and transportation engineer Darrin Shoemaker said the DOT notified him of the possible lane closure last week, but he was out of state.
He said he has since advised the DOT that off-island traffic volumes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. make it impractical to shut down a lane on William Hilton Parkway.
