Students win photo honors

The Camera Club of Hilton Head Island recently announced one of the club's sponsored entries in the Photographic Society of America's Youth Showcase -- Jessica Smith's "Only One" -- was awarded Best in Show.

Jessica, a junior at Hilton Head Island High School, won first place in the People category and then was judged the Best in Show. She is the daughter of Sherai and Rufus Smith, and her high school photography instructor is Patty Schoelkopf-Lewis. Jessica received a cash award and a PSA Youth Membership. Her print will be included in the September issue of the PSA Journal and also posted on the group's website.

The PSA Youth Showcase is an annual competition for high school age students attending public and private schools. The showcase, which began in 1998, garners more than 600 entries a year from about 125 schools.

The club also announced the winners of its 2011 Kurtzberg Awards at Hilton Head Island High. First place was awarded to senior Badlyn Rolfe for "I Am the End of the World." Jessica Smith's "Only One" took second place. Junior Santiago Tovar's "Vain" won third place. All three are students of Schoelkopf-Lewis.

The Kurtzberg Awards started in 1998 and are presented by the Camera Club of Hilton Head Island in honor of the club's founder, Larry Kurtzberg. The club-sponsored contest is open only to students at Hilton Head Island High. Student entries must be in black and white, and the student must do all of his or her own developing and matting. All of these elements are included in the judging criteria. Cash awards and certificates are presented to the winners.
