St. Helena Island native and "American Idol" season 12 winner Candice Glover will headline the University of South Carolina Beaufort's homecoming concert Saturday night. Glover, a former USCB student, will anchor the university's week-long homecoming celebration.
"I'm excited to go back and see everyone," Glover said. "I wasn't (at USCB) for too long, but it was enough time to establish relationships with other students and teachers."
Glover's friend and fellow "American Idol" contestant Burnell Taylor will be the opening act at the concert. Taylor came in seventh on "Idol" season 12.
"I was closest to him more than anybody else" on the show, Glover said. "To be able to perform for all of our fans collectively is great."
The concert follows a week of Mardi Gras-themed homecoming events, including a king cake baking contest and necklace making.
Saturday homecoming events include a women's soccer game against the Savannah College of Art and Design at 1 p.m. at Fin Land Field, food trucks and a step show beginning at 5 p.m.
Women's softball games against Johns River State College are planned for noon and 2 p.m. Sunday at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
The university has already surpassed ticket sales from last year's homecoming concert featuring Eric Hutchinson, according to director of student life Kate Vermilyea.
"We've been mentally preparing for 1,500 people," Vermilyea said, adding that Glover's local draw may enhance ticket sales.
"We are really excited since she is an alum here. Glover was very active in on-campus events as a student," Vermilyea said, "and it's neat to see her rise to fame."
