The honors keep rolling in for Poona Ford.
Last week, we told you that the Hilton Head Island High defensive tackle was named an All-American by CBS Sports, receiving an invitation to play in the Los Angeles-based Semper Fi All-American Bowl in the process. That same week, Missouri and Purdue offered the 2014 prospect.
More schools came into the fray this time around. Arkansas, Kansas State and Arizona all offered the Seahawks prospect earlier this week and more schools seem to be stopping in by the day. His offer sheet -- which is up to 16 schools now -- also includes South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Illinois, among others.
Ford plans to take unofficial visits to Tennessee and North Carolina this weekend, where both may pull the trigger on an offer, coach B.J. Payne said. Oregon has also been in touch, as Ducks coaches spent 45 minutes on the phone with Payne Monday night and plan to make a decision on an offer after evaluating more film.
Never miss a local story.
Should he wait until after the season to make a commitment, Payne believes he could wind up with nearly 50 offers. It's Payne's understanding that such accolades would also put him in the running for Hilton Head High's biggest recruiting prospect ever.
"I think he'll obviously be the biggest football recruit in the history of the school," he said. "I would assume the biggest in any sport at our school, ever."
No decision seems close, however. The prospect will make trips to three camps in late spring -- Under Armour, ESPN 150 and Nike -- where his offer sheet is expected to grow.
