Paul Vander Berg won singles and doubles championships, and Mark Shaeffer and Larry Hurrel took singles titles in this past weekend's Southern Senior Clay Court Closed on Kiawah Island. The tournament was open only to players from the nine-state Southern Section.
Bluffton's Vander Berg confirmed his No. 1 seeding by defeating No. 2 Allen Lyle of Jackson, Miss., 6-3, 6-1 in the Men's 75s final, then teamed with Lyle to take the four-team doubles round robin.
In the Men's 55s, the unseeded Shaeffer advanced to the final on three wins including three-setters over top seed Frederick Wright of Atlanta and third-seeded Hank Ream of St. Simons Island, Ga. There, the Hilton Head Islander defeated Jonathan Hart of Atlanta, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-5.
Hilton Head's Hurrel marked his run to the Men's 80s final with a win over No. 1 seed George Kuechenmeister of Smyrna, Ga., 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. He captured the championship by defeating Harold Swensen of Johns Island, 6-2, 6-4. Bob Koenig of Bluffton and Kuechenmeister won the 80s doubles round robin.
Also taking home a championship were Norm and Palma Chryst of Bluffton, who won the Mixed 65s title over Eugene Budzichkowski and Judith Sandler of Summerville, 6-1, 6-1.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SOCCER CHALLENGE WEDNESDAY
This year's Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Buckwalter Soccer Complex located off Buckwalter Parkway in Bluffton. The event is open to both boys and girls, ages 9-14. Boys and Girls winners in each age group qualify for the district competition to be held later this year.
As in the past, the competition is in the form of penalty kicks.
Council winners and their parents will be invited to an awards ceremony at which prizes will be presented to a boy and girl in each age category.
SWING FOR THE MEMORIES
There are still spots available for the Swing For The Memories Golf Tournament to benefit the Alzheimer's Association's Walk to End Alzheimer's.
The tournament tees off with a 10 a.m. shotgun start Saturday at Hilton Head National. The fee of $100 per person or $400 per team covers golf, cart, breakfast, lunch and beverages.
