The Unit, a Beaufort-based Amateur Athletic Union boys 17-under basketball team placed eighth out of 36 teams on the East Coast Division II in the AAU National Boys 17U Basketball Tournament held July 9 through 13 in Orlando, Fla.
The team, made up of 10 student-athletes from Beaufort High School, Battery Creek High School, Hilton Head Christian Academy and Whale Branch Early College High School, won its pool by defeating teams form three different states.
To advance to the championship bracket, The Unit won Pool H, going 3-0 with a 97-80 win over Atlanta Select Prime, a 68-54 win over Florida's FSA Elite and an 82-66 win over Richmond (N.C.) Prep Program.
In the championship bracket, The Unit dropped three straight games, falling to 51-38 to eventual champion Mass. Premier Elite, 53-51 to the Charlotte (N.C.) Storm and 68-62 to the Orlando (Fla.) Hoopsters.
Members of the team were Adonis Williams (Battery Creek), Jawan Mack (Beaufort High); Joshua Polk (Hilton Head Christian), Darryl Owens (Beaufort High), Henry Jones III (Beaufort High), Simeon Middleton (Whale Branch); Henry Mack (Beaufort High), Dustin Maurer (Bluffton), Sire Perry (Beaufort High), Otis McClain (Beaufort High) and Michael Middleton (Whale Branch).
The team was led by head coach David Francis, assistant Al Williams and bench coach Kenny Mack.
VDM HAS FREE TENNIS LESSONS
Van Der Meer Tennis Academy is hosting free tennis lessons with instruction from its future Tennis University graduates.
Lessons, for players 12 and older, will be offered from 5 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Van Der Meer Tennis Center.

HHI ROWING TEAM HOLDING INFORMATIONAL MEETING
A registration and informational meeting for the Hilton Head Island Rowing Team will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 for parents and prospective rowers among area high school students at the Palmetto Electric building at 111 Matthews Drive. Parking is available in back of building.
