HOOP SHOOT CONTEST: What: Bluffton Elks Lodge annual national free-throw shooting contest; Who: Children ages 8-13; When: Noon, Jan. 12; Where: Bluffton Boys and Girls Club; Notes: Three age divisions for boys and girls. Awards for division winners and runners-up. Winners advance to district competition in Charleston. Contestants must have valid birth certificate. PALS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM: What: Registration for Beaufort County Parks and Leisure Services After-School Program; Where: Bluffton center, Burton Wells, Broomfield, Port Royal, Scott Center and Lind Brown; Notes: Registrations will be accepted until each center is full. KIDS FISHING TOURNAMENT: What: 16th annual Thanksgiving tournament for kids; Who: Ages 4-14; When: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 29; Where: Fripp Island Marina; Cost: Free; Notes: All kids from ages 4 to 14, accompanied by an adult, are invited to fish from a boat, the marina dock or a private fishing hole. Bring your own rod, reel, tackle and a life jacket. Free hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream for the kids. Plenty of prizes. BEAUFORT SPORTFISHING AND DIVING CLUB MEETING: When: Dec. 12; Where: Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, Lady's Island; Time: Social at 6:30 p.m., meeting at 7 p.m.; Notes: Capt. Herman "Bo" Von Harten will give a presentation on winter shoreline fishing. He will discuss rules and regulations regarding fisheries. His wife, Amber, is a member of the South Atlantic Marine Fishery and will give an update on their current regulations, quotas, and future management agendas. No reservations are needed. HOSPITAL AUXILIARY INVITATIONAL: What: 27th annual Hospital Auxiliary Invitational presented by the Corkern Group; When: Dec. 2-3; Where: Harbour Town Golf Links and Wexford Golf Club, Hilton Head Island; Cost: $250 per player; Notes: Cost includes prizes, lunch each day and an awards ceremony. Net proceeds benefit the Auxiliary at Hilton Head Hospital and will be used to provide medical and nursing scholarships, and prescription medicine for those in need. BEFORE-SCHOOL AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS: When: Monday through Friday (regularly scheduled public school days); Where: Hilton Head Island Recreation Center; Notes: Programs combine play with academics. Children in the afterschool program receive homework assistance. Programs focus on youth development, academic success, friendship and character-building. Before-school program children will be walked over to school. There is a registration fee of $30 per child or $50 per family each year. Completed registration forms must be turned in to Rec Center before your child can attend the program. Financial assistance is available to those in need. JINGLE JINGLE RUN: What: 22nd annual Hilton Head Hospital Jingle Jingle 5K Run, Health Walk and Children's Fun Run; When: 9 a.m., Dec. 21; Where: Hilton Head Regional Medical Center Campus and Main Street; Notes: All standard male and female divisions. First 500 participants receive an event T-shirt, jingle bells and a candy cane. Participants who run in an elf or santa costume will receive a $5 Bear Foot Sports discount coupon. Award ceremony featuring refreshments and door prizes after the race. Participants are asked to bring gift cards or phone cards for donations to benefit CODA (Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse).
