DILLON WINS USTA EVENT IN NORTH CAROLINA
Madison Dillon, 12, who trains at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy, won the Girls 14 division championship over the weekend in the 32nd annual RRC Junior Classic in Raleigh, N.C.
Dillon, who plays for Hilton Head Christian Academy, knocked off the division's No. 2 seed en route to the finals, where she then defeated fourth-seeded Fleming Landau, of Charlotte, 6-3, 6-2.
Smith Stearns Tennis Academy's Sara McClure finished runner-up in the Girls 12 division, falling in three sets to fourth-seeded Melody Zhang, of Cary, N.C., in the finals. McClure, of Bluffton, was the top seed.
NATIONAL CLAY COURT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN SAVANNAH
The USTA National Men's 55 Clay Court Championship will be held Oct. 5-11 at The Landings Club on Skidaway Island, Ga. The tournament will feature nationally-ranked tennis players over the age of 55 from around the country. The event, to be held at The Landings Club's Franklin Creek Tennis Center, is open to the public and admission is free.
