More than 180 players will flock to Sun City Hilton Head this weekend for the 14th annual Sun City Senior Doubles Tennis Championships, which begin Thursday and run through Sunday.
Action will get underway this afternoon at 2:30 with 15 matches slated to be played. The event will continue over the weekend with matches beginning at 9:30 each morning, as 183 total participants play in the 224 scheduled events.
"It's going to be a full weekend," director Sherry Lynchconrad said.
The USTA-sanctioned, Level-3 tournament features levels 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, although men's, women's and mixed doubles age divisions will also be played. Eight teams will take part in the men's 70s event while three more will compete in the men's 75s.
Consolation rounds will be held following today's preliminary rounds to ensure participants at least two matches.
"I think one of the unique things about this tournament is that this is a senior tournament as opposed to a tournament for anyone 18 or over," Lynchconrad said. "We have players in their 50s, but we also have a couple players that are 80 or approaching 80."
Admission is free for this year's event, which was awarded the S.C. Adult/Senior Tournament of the Year award in 2012. Sponsor exhibits, hot dogs and beer will also be available for those who attend, although a donation is requested. All action will take play at the main tennis courts in Sun City near Magnolia Hall.
More than 50 more tennis players signed up for this year's event than last year's, with participants coming from around Georgia and South Carolina.
"I would say its grown over the five years that I've been here," Lynchconrad said. "And certainly it's grown over last year. ... We did a better job with publicity this year, and it's definitely paying off."
