SUN CITY SOFTBALL TEAM 2ND AT OPEN NATIONALS
The Sun City Travel Softball Team competed with eight other teams in the 60 AA bracket of the ISSA US Open National Championships last weekend in Myrtle Beach.
After losing the opening seeding game, 17-16, to the Spring Ford 60's of Pennsylvania, Sun City defeated New Bern (N.C.), 15-0. In double-elimination games, Sun City then beat Flip Dow (N.C.), 21-19 and won a rematch with Spring Ford 60's, 19-11, to earn one of two No. 1 seeds.
In the second day of play, in a matchup of undefeated teams in the tournament, the Virginia Cavaliers defeated Sun City for the championship, 13-11. Virginia jumped out to a 13-4 lead, but Sun City pitchers Bob Lee and Mike Coriale held the Cavaliers in check for the last few innings, giving Sun City a chance to mount a last-inning comeback that fell just short.
