Strikers win Calhoun Cup title in shootout
Four Calhoun Cup division finals took place on Saturday at Burton Wells Complex in Beaufort.
The year-end youth soccer tournament saw the Strikers win the girls 8-10 division after double overtime, beating Fusion in a 4-2 shootout. Amber Gielarowski had two goals for the Strikers. Sierra Schweitzer and Dorian Nungaray each had one.
For Fusion, Hope Gray scored both goals.
In the girls 11-12 division, Fusion defeated Fire 7-1. Fusion saw two goals each from Wesly Woodward, Sissy Mungin and Kelsey Vigil. Alexa Zapp also scored. Mary Keane scored the lone goal for the Fire.
In the boys 11-12 division, Jack Olsson scored the only goal in the Hurricanes' 1-0 victory over the Sweepers.
In the 9-10 boys division, the Fire beat the Strikers 3-1. Reese Bowles had two goals and John Bell had one for the Fire. Matthew Campbell scored for the Strikers.
Saturday also marked the first round for the boys 13-16 division.
The Fire defeated the Sweepers 7-5. Conner Akers and Santee Rabon each scored two goals for the Fire. Aaron Salinas scored two for the Sweepers.
The Hurricanes swept Fusion 4-0 with two goals from Samuel Negron and one each from Eddie Villegas and Sheldon Capdepon.
In the other game of the day, the Outlaws won by forfeit because the Strikers didn't have enough players.
The boys 13-16 division will continue with the second round at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Burton Wells. The finals are set for Thursday. The girls 13-16 division will start Monday.
