Battery Creek's Chaney, Sharpe picked for North-South football game
For the first time since 2002, Battery Creek will be represented in the state's annual North-South All-Star Football Game, as wide receiver Alex Sharpe and strong safety Ricardo Chaney were named to the South roster on Tuesday.
Chaney, who has verbally committed to play football at Clemson next fall, recorded 38 tackles this season for the 3-7 Dolphins, while Sharpe caught 22 passes for 375 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. Sharpe also ran for 79 yards and saw time at quarterback in Battery Creek's spread offense.
"With Chaney, I think the coaches saw his upside as a big strong safety, linebacker-type and liked that about him," said Dophins coach Carlos Cave, who will serve as an assistant for the South team in this year's contest. "With Alex, most of the film the coaches looked at were from the first five games, and that's when Alex put up his biggest numbers. It's a good opportunity for both of them."
Quarterback Colin Drafts was the last Dolphin to play in this prestigious contest, which features 88 of the top players in South Carolina.
The 62nd installment of this all-star game will be played on Dec. 12 at Myrtle Beach High School's Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium with kickoff slated for noon. Tickets will cost $15 at the gate.
