The Hilton Head Island defense, manhandled in the first half by Aiken's big offensive line, held the Fighting Green Hornets scoreless in the second half, and Aidan Hegarty and company did the rest, scoring 20 unanswered points to lead the Seahawks to a 27-21 win in the first round of the Class 3-A playoffs.
The Seahawks (10-1) advanced to play at Myrtle Beach on Friday.
After Aiken's tandem of quarterback Bryson Jones and running back Brayton Sanders tallied big play after big play in the first half, the Seahawks held the Hornets to a punt, two failed fourth-down tries, a three-and-out and an interception in their final five possessions.
Hegarty ran for two scores (17 and 2 yards) and threw two scoring passes, a perfect 39-yarder he dropped into Jestin Morrow's hands in the end zone and the game-winning short pass that Bryce Singeton turned into a 30-yard sprint for the end zone with 1:27 left in the fourth quarter.
Never miss a local story.
Aiken (6-5) made Seahawks fans sweat, though. After two quick Jones passes resulted in a first down, he completed a long pass to the Seahawks 16.
But after a sack and an incompletion, Jones took a shot to the right side of the end zone, where Singleton snatched the ball from the air before it reached it's intended target, ending the threat and the game.
