Caleb Gee lifted weights with his Beaufort High School football teammates.
That wasn’t enough for the offensive lineman. When he finished, he would go to Beaufort Middle School, where Eagles strength coach Ray Jones works out members of his Team Beaufort weightlifting program. Gee lifted there, too.
The work helped him claim all of the Eagles’ lifting records for linemen, Jones said. Combined with the technique learned through the Beaufort High system, Gee compiled an impressive highlight reel, one that helped grab the attention of a new Charleston Southern coaching staff.
“Just a great, great film of him just mashing people,” Beaufort High coach Mark Clifford said. “I think they like his strength, they like his base blocking.”
Never miss a local story.
Gee visited Charleston Southern this past weekend and committed to the Buccaneers. He will sign Wednesday.
Beaufort High has a number of other players mulling options.
Running back JaClay Mixon, who rushed for 20 touchdowns and more than 1,600 yards as a senior, has an offer from Division II Limestone, which will launch its football program in the fall of 2014. Offensive lineman Tyler Wilson and linebacker Clint Wright have offers from Benedict, Clifford said Monday. Wright was second on the team in tackles, with 96, and led the Eagles in tackles for loss, with 13.
Clifford wasn’t certain Monday of his players’ plans, outside of Gee.
Charleston Southern coach Jay Mills retired at the beginning of the year, after the Bucs had promised Gee an official visit. The visit was still on once incoming Charleston Southern coach Jayme Chadwell and his staff saw Gee’s highlights.
Gee also receievd interest from The Citadel and Limestone, where he visited with Mixon. Clifford said he wasn’t sure what offense Charleston Southern would run, but that Gee was strong off the ball, with good technique.
Jones said Gee stopped at about a 560-pound squat, a school record for all positions. He encouraged Gee’s football path, but said the Beaufort High senior could lift competitively when he stops playing.
“He’s definitely coming into his own as far as confidence in himself and getting bigger and stronger,” Jones said. “He’s got a big upside to him. I believe he’s going to do well.”
