Beaufort High 29, Colleton County 28
When Colleton County returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to pull within a point late in the fourth quarter Friday, Beaufort High coach Mark Cliffford was saying, "here we go again."
But the Cougars (0-11) went for two and the win instead of kicking for the tie. The Eagles (4-7, 1-4) stopped them and held on for the win, their first of the year in Region 8-AAAA.
"We were shooting ourselves in the foot all game with a penalty here, a penalty there," Eagles coach Mark Clifford said. "They hit a couple of fades on us on perfect balls. But we just overcame it tonight. Luck was still against us, but this time we fought through it."
The Eagles took an early 7-6 lead on a JaClay Mixon touchdown run after a long pass to Stephen Baggett. But the Cougars answered for a 12-7 lead.
Then, the Cougars added a field goal for a 15-13 lead after Mixon took his eyes off a pitch and turned it over.
In the second half, Mixon rambled 15 yards on a fake punt, then a scored on a 30-yard run to make it 15-13.
"Then we started hammering the ball on them and then wen to the sweep, and then threw a long TD pass to Baggett on the fake," Clifford said.
The two-point conversion pass to Baggett was good and the Eagles led 21-15.
The Cougars again retook the lead, 22-21, but the Eagles ran it down the field again and Mixon converted the two-point play after he scored his third touchdown.
That's when the Cougars returned the kick. But Beaufort was able to hold on defense after punting it away to seal the win.
