The S.C. High School League released playoff pairings for Classes 3-A, 2-A and 1-A on Saturday in Columbia and there was good news for Hilton Head Island High School.
The Seahawks (5-5), the fourth seed in Region 8-AAA, are in the playoffs and will travel to Strom Thurmond (9-1) on Friday.
"I knew last night we would be in," first-year Seahawks head coach B.J. Payne said. "I just didn't know if they would move the No. 4 seeds around, and they didn't."
The Seahawks were 4-7 last season, losing in the first round of the playoffs.
"It feels good," Payne said. "The kids have worked hard, and we expect a lot of them. The seniors deserve a chance in the playoffs and it gives our young guys at least one more game and a week of practice to get better, which is very valuable."
A year after going 1-9, Battery Creek won 5 of its final 7 games this season to finish 5-5 and earn a No. 6 seed and a home game against 11th-seeded Waccamaw (3-7) in the Class 2-A Division I playoffs.
No. 12 seed Ridgeland-Hardeeville (4-6) will travel to No. 5 Edisto (4-6) in the Class 2-A Division I playoffs. The Jaguars made the postseason in the first season since the two Jasper County high schools were consolidated.
In Class 1-A Division I, seventh-seeded Whale Branch (6-3) draws a rapid rematch with second-seeded and Region 5-A champion Allendale-Fairfax (9-1), which defeated the Warriors 14-7 on Friday.
