Backfield mates Wyatt Sherpensky and Omar Cummings, who each topped 1,100 yards rushing this season, head up a quartet of Beaufort players who earned all-region honors in Class 4A, along with three Hilton Head Island selections.
Sherpensky, who was selected as an athlete, and Cummings were joined on the Region 8-4A squad by Beaufort linebacker Tim Clark and defensive back Jeffrey Smyth. Hilton Head Island speedsters Tyler Hamilton and Bryce Singleton also were named to the team, as was linebacker Jose Gaytan.
Cummings and Sherpensky provided a powerful 1-2 punch for the Eagles, combining for 2,384 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground as Beaufort (8-4) reached the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Cummings led the team with 1,270 yards and 16 touchdowns, while Sherpensky’s 134-yard effort in Friday’s loss to Chapin pushed him to 1,114 yards and 20 TDs. Sherpensky also led the Eagles with 20 catches for 304 yards and five TDs, with four more scores coming via kick returns.
Never miss a local story.
Clark and Smyth, meantime, spearheaded a Beaufort defense that gave up just 19.0 points per game during the regular season.
Hamilton and Singleton were named as receivers, though both were utilized in multiple places in the Hilton Head backfield. Hamilton rushed for 634 yards and five TDs, added another 610 yards and five TDs in receptions and took back two kicks for scores.
Singleton filled the scoresheet with touchdowns rushing, passing, receiving and via returns, including a stint at quarterback when starter Collin Kaiser was sidelined with a foot injury. Gaytan was the centerpiece of a Seahawks defense that held five of its 11 opponents under 10 points.
