Hilton Head Island held Wando’s state powerhouse boys’ lacrosse team to its lowest scoring output in two years, but still wound up on the wrong side of a 9-2 result Wednesday.
The Seahawks (2-1) became the first squad to limit Wando, winner of three of the past four state titles, under 10 goals since the 2014 state final. Goalkeeper Noah Flores made 15 saves for Hilton Head, several from near point-blank range.
Colin Courtney also sparked the Seahawks’ defense with two takeaways. Jack Flowers and Layton Kirby scored the Hilton Head goals, with Duncan Marx tallying an assist.
Thomas Heyward 3, Thomas Sumter 1: Hannah Cannon blasted a three-run homer that provided all the scoring as the Rebels won their season opener.
Selice Daley struck out seven batters while scattering three hits in seven innings of pitching. She also had the Rebels’ only other hit.
Beaufort 9th at Patriot Invitational: Matthew Campbell paced the Eagles by tying for fifth among 90 players in the 18-team field at Wescott Plantation in Summerville.
