It's never a gimme, but Beaufort head wrestling coach Travis Wynn expected to win Monday night.
And the third-ranked Eagles did just that, rolling over Airport 48-20 to advance to the Class 3-A Lower State Championship.
Beaufort will host cross-county rival Hilton Head Island, a 67-6 winner over Swansea, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
"They're a good team," Wynn said of Airport. "They won their region. We won our region. Down low we're tough, though. That's where we win matches every time. My 106-pounder right on up to 145. They hardly ever lose."
Never miss a local story.
And none of them did Monday.
J. Johnson (106 pounds) won by forfeit. Tramone Jenkins (113), Kamren Spann (120) and Will Spann (132) had first-period pins, Tramon Jenkins (126) won by technical fall and Justin Campbell (138) and Jeffrey Smyth (145) won decisions, 6-4 and 5-2, respectively.
Wynn was impressed with the wins by Campbell and Smyth.
"They each had really tough kids and they both wrestled above their weight class because I moved them up trying some things," Wynn said. "They both stepped up and wrestled heavier kids and got victories."
All in all, the win was more decisive than Wynn expected.
"We did better than I thought we would on paper," Wynn said. "I actually had us winning 45-25. Someone won who wasn't supposed to."
Now Beaufort (42-7) turns its attention to fourth-ranked Hilton Head Island.
"My kids want it, they're fighting hard," Wynn said. "They want to get back to the state championship."
