The high school sports season is winding to a close this week, but local athletes are still earning recognition for their accomplishments this season.Ten area players were named to soccer all-region teams last week for Class AA, Region IV, headlined by four from Class AA state champions Hilton Head Christian Academy.
The Eagle's Alyssa Lane became the first HHCA player to ever be named the region's Player of the Year. Lane tallied 16 goals and three assists as team captain. Abigail Bensch, who scored a goal in Saturday's North-South All Star game (a 6-0 win for the South squad), also earned all-region accolades after leading the team with 24 goals, including two in the championship game against Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach. Defender Callie Haertel, who helped the Eagles compile 10 shutouts over the course of the year, and Allison Meeder, who scored 18 times and assisted on 13 other goals, also made all-region. Coach Ben Gerdts earned Coach of the Year honors.
Their rivals, Hilton Head Prep, boasted three all-region talents, including midfielder Emily Bailey, goalkeeper Kate Herman and midfielder Catherine Sheehan. Beaufort Academy defender Brynna Ferry, midfielder Amanda Kahn and forward Mary Keane were also named to the team.
