No matter what, the Seahawks will represent the Lower State in the girls 3-A tennis state championship.
Hilton Head Island shut out Darlington 6-0 on the road Wednesday, while Myrtle Beach High School -- also the Seahawks -- won its match to set up a rematch of last season’s Lower State final.
“We played strong, we played consistent,” Hilton Head Island coach Jennifer Weitekamper said. “And we picked the pace up just a little bit when we saw the gray skies rolling in.”The skies got dark, but the rain held off until the Seahawks had earned their victory. The loss was the first of the season for Darlington (16-1).
Now, Hilton Head (20-2) will host its nemesis at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Myrtle Beach eliminated Hilton Head last season, ending its streak of consecutive state championships at 6.
Never miss a local story.
“It’s going to be a very tight, tough match, one of our toughest matches this season,” Weitekamper said.
Myrtle Beach agreed to the earlier time so it would not be getting home so late Monday night. Weitekamper said she doesn’t mind the early match.
“I don’t want the girls to be rushed by daylight,” she said. “And if the No. 1 doubles have to play, I want to be sure they feel they played properly.”
