New Hilton Head Prep volleyball coach Laura Sirball, whose hiring was confirmed Tuesday by athletics director Rich Basirico, said she is looking forward to getting to work.
"I'm a little nervous and excited," Sirball said over the phone from Virginia, where she is finishing up a job at Shenandoah University. "I really don't know what to expect to be honest with you."
In addition to taking over the head coaching position for the volleyball program, Sirball is expected to contribute to girls basketball and will also be teaching math at the middle school. Sirball played volleyball at then-Shenandoah College, and has coaching experience in various capacities over several years.
The move down to the Island, she said, is hopefully her last stop. She and her husband have been to Hilton Head several times, and Sirball said they each always wanted to move closer to the beach. In Prep, she got her wish.
"It was sort of just luck," Sirball said of the job search. "I got a great feel when I came down and interviewed at Prep. It was so welcoming. It felt like home. It felt like I wasn't leaving my current place of employment. I know I've got a lot to learn about the area, about the school."
She's already making inroads in that respect. Sirball said during her visit to the school, she held an open gym for prospective players. She believes the team will be very young and mostly rebuilding this upcoming season.
"I think sports teaches a lot of character, a lot of leadership," Sirball said. "I hope to instill that in the girls. Actual coaching style, I think it really is going to depend on the team and the girls that I have."
