With the summer break drawing ever closer to a close, Hilton Head Prep athletics director Rich Basirico provided several updates on some changes in the school's coaching staff.
Of note, former girls volleyball coach Steve Graham decided to step away from his role at the conclusion of last season. Basirico said the move was not unexpected, and that he was aware Graham would be looking for other opportunities to further his coaching career. Basirico said the program will now be led by Laura Sirball, originally from Virginia, who will also take on a teaching role at the middle school.
"We're very excited," Basirico said of Sirball, who will also work with the basketball program in an as-yet undetermined capacity. "I think she's a wonderful fit for our school."
Two other coaching positions remain open, though Basirico believes that each will be filled by the start of the school year.
Never miss a local story.
Former girls tennis coach Job de Boer, who works as a tennis pro on the island, decided to leave the post due to scheduling concerns. Basirico said de Boer "did a tremendous job with our girls." As of Tuesday, a new coach had not been hired, but Basirico said he has conducted an interview already and expects to name a replacement soon.
The boys soccer program is also looking to replace departed coach Matt Dakolios, who left to take a position with John Paul II Catholic School.
"We are going to miss Matt," Basirico said.
Because that sport doesn't start until the spring, Basirico said the hiring schedule is a little more flexible, though he hopes to have a new coach named by the start of the school year.
