Andrew Orischak did not have the benefit of a practice round, but shook off some early rust to lead the Blade Junior Golf Classic.
The Hilton Head Island resident shot 3-under-par 68 at Thornblade Club in Greer and leads the 36-hole event by two shots over three players at 1 under.
Orischak is coming off the Players Amateur in Bluffton, where he led after the first round and tied for 24th. He opened with a bogey and went out in even-par 36.
But he played his final eight holes in 4 under to grab the first-round lead.
Thirteen-year-old Daniel Azallion, from Hilton Head, shot 1-over 72 and is four shots back.
Bluffton's Drew Weary opened with a 2-over 73. Bluffton's Bryson Nimmer and Trace Crowe were another shot back after each shooting 74.
Hilton Head's Nicholas Russell shot 75 in Round 1.
Other area players in the field include Hilton Head's Travis Mancill, who shot 78, Bluffton's Matt Lehman, who opened with an 82, and Beaufort's Matthew Campbell, who shot 85.
In the girls division, Hilton Head's Anna Eddy shot 81 and is tied for 14th.
