Hilton Head Island High School midfielders Ashley and Amanda Green added another accolade to cap off their stellar high school careers this week, when each was named to the Class 3-A all-state girls soccer team.
The senior twins led Hilton Head Island High to its fourth straight state championship with a 1-0 victory over Chapin last week. The winning goal, fittingly, came off a combination play from the two of them, with Amanda scoring the 48th-minute goal off an assist from Ashley.
The Greens have also been selected to participate in the 2014 Clash of the Carolinas all-star game on July 12 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston.
The Hilton Head Island boys soccer team, eliminated in the second round of the state playoffs, was also represented on the Class 3-A all-state boys soccer team. Senior forward Eneo Torres, who scored 17 goals and provided eight assists, stood out for the Seahawks and coach Wayne Quinlan.
Never miss a local story.
"Eneo kind of got off to a slow start," Quinlan said. "When he got going, the more he played, the more I realized he needed to play."
Quinlan characterized Torres' play as "crafty," saying his creativity and elusiveness, as well as his power, helped him make a name for himself among area coaches. Described as family oriented and soft-spoken off the field, Torres earned the respect of his teammates, Quinlan said.
"The one thing that sticks out the most with me is he's very focused on his family," Quinlan said. "I admire that."
