Josh Fickes isn't quite done with high school golf.
The Beaufort High School senior will play in the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association's North-South tournament this weekend at Golden Bear Golf Club on Hilton Head Island. Fickes, who will play at Clemson, is part of the South team and the only area player on the roster.
Fickes signed with the Tigers in November after a big year that included winning the South Carolina Golf Association Junior Championship with a birdie on the final hole.
The North-South event gives Fickes a chance to close his high school years in style. He shot 76 earlier this month at the Class 4-A Lower State golf tournament in Aiken and finished tied for 12th individually and didn't reach the Class 4-A championship at Furman Golf Club.
"It's a pretty sour taste in your mouth after Lower State and reading in the paper about the guys at state," Fickes said. "And knowing Furman, it (stinks) not to be there."
Fickes has played high school events at Golden Bear and said he is looking forward to the Ryder Cup-style format. The teams will play modified alternate shot Saturday morning, best ball in the afternoon and singles Sunday morning.
The rest the South roster includes Aiken's Spencer Skiff, Fort Dorchester's R.J. Keur, Hartsville's Drake Cassidy, Lexington's Zach Herold, Myrtle Beach's Mark Karavan, South Aiken's Alex Handy and Sumter's John Keffer. South coaches are Gilbert's Wayland Hiott and Aiken's Vic Lancaster.
The North roster includes: Jake Smith, Dorman; Adam Garrett, Easley; Keenan Huskey, Greenville; Bobby Powell, Hillcrest; Jonathan Hardee, Riverside; Peyton Shore, Saluda; Chase Cale, Southside Christian; Forrest Fowler, Spartanburg. Coaches are Spartanburg's Bill Dees and Greenwood's Chip Whitt.
AREA PLAYERS SHINE IN SCISAA NORTH-SOUTH SOCCER
Beaufort Academy's Miranda Weslake scored three goals as the South team downed the North 8-3 in the SCISAA North-South soccer game Saturday at Orangeburg Prep.
Pinewood Prep's Charlotte Ring had three for the South, as well. Hilton Head Christian Academy's Allison Meeder scored a goal for the South, while teammate Abigail Bensch scored one for the North, as did Hilton Head Prep's Carley Willey.
"To even out numbers, Abigail and Carley played for the North squad," South coach Ben Gerdts said.
Pinewood Prep's Sarai Bowman had the other South goal.
"I was very proud of the three who represented our school and also had the pleasure to coach a variety of talented players from the local area as well as Charleston whom we competed against throughout the season," Gerdts, normally the head coach at Hilton Head Christian, said. "Most notable were BA's Weslake, St. Andrew's Dominique Desantels, and Pinewood's Ring. Both sides had incredible quality and youth, which projects very well for the next few years of SCISAA girls soccer."
4 HHCA GOLFERS NAMED SCISAA ALL-STATE
Based on their performances earlier this month in the SCISAA golf championships, several area golfers have been honored, including 2014 Player of the Year Jonathan Schuble of Hilton Head Christian Academy.
Joining Schuble (142) on the All-State team are Trace Crowe (146), Bryson Nimmer (147) and Matt Lehman (151), all of Hilton Head Christian.
