With only a little more than a day left before the start of his Adventure Cove/Lava Fitness All-American Football Camp, Hilton Head Island High School head football coach B.J. Payne has a familiar feeling.
Payne said 85 kids, from kindergarten to eighth grade, have registered for the camp that starts Friday, up from 70 last year. But it's the ones who haven't registered that are on Payne's mind.
"This has got that same eerie feeling of the second year in Ohio," Payne said, "when we had 125 kids walk up."
The Seahawks coach said between 30 and 35 kids typically register the day of the camp. That would make this year's camp more than successful.
Never miss a local story.
That can be at least partially attributed to the talent Payne has lined up as instructors for this year's camp, including Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller and South Carolina running back Mike Davis.
There have been some changes to the lineup, however.
South Carolina defensive back Jimmy Legree, a Beaufort High product, joined Michigan cornerback Courtney Avery and Michigan defensive tackle Jibreel Black in backing out.
The three have all signed with NFL teams, and because the NFL draft was moved back from its traditional April slot, Payne's camp conflicts with rookie minicamp.
There are two additions to the guest list, however. Clemson running backs Zac Brooks and D.J. Howard will make the trip from the Upstate. The Gamecocks may send a replacement for Legree, as well.
"It's never hard to bring guys in to do the camp because they absolutely love it," Payne said in April. "What it comes down to is their schedule. It's just a matter of them working it out.
The camp, to be held Friday through Sunday at the Hilton Head High practice fields, is open to kids in grades K through eight. The camp hosted 125 kids, including walk-ups, last year.
Players can sign up the day of the camp, but Payne said it's nice if they preregister so the staff can make sure it has everything it needs for each individual camper.
