A handful of Beaufort County athletes made their presence felt at four Lower State qualifying track and field meets on Saturday.
At the Class 4-A meet, Beaufort High's boys and girls teams produced winners in four events. Michael Dixon crossed the finish line first in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.2 seconds. In the 4x400, Malcolm Simmons, Dequan Cason, Nathan Parker, Michael Dixon edged the rest of the field with a time of 3:20.60.
On the girls side, sophomore BreAnna Heyward-White qualified for the state meet in four different events, winning one of them. Heyward-White sped to a win in the 400, finishing in 56.7. Amanda Barnes reached 12 feet to finish atop the pole vault standings.
Heyward-White's performance, in particular, caught the eye of coach Herbert Glaze.
"She had a wonderful day," Glaze said. "Ran smart and did wonderful."
In Class 2-A competition, Battery Creek High School girls track qualified for eight events at next week's state meet, and boasted winners in three. Dasji'a Cannon, Zakiya Cobban, Shanice Pusha-Powell and Diamond Smith took first in the 4x100 at 49.01. Cobban also won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Quamecha Morrison cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump.
Coach Tyrone Pierce said his girls team had a few athletes who didn't do as well as they had hoped, but he was already looking forward to seeing some of them compete at the state meet.
"A couple of other things could have happened for us," Pierce said. "We are still excited about it."
Battery Creek's David Partridge won the pole vault, clearing 11 feet.
Whale Branch's Devonta' Glover won the 3,200 at the Class 1-A qualifier with a time of 11:11.87. On the girls' side, Kourtney Matt finished first in the 3200 with a time of 14:38.84. Kemoni Jenkins won the 100 hurdles in 16.83, and the 400 hurdles in 1:10.89.
