Ten Beaufort County wrestlers still hold championship aspirations after Friday's opening round of action in the S.C. High School League individual state tournament in Anderson.
Bluffton led the way for the county, advancing all three of its state qualifiers to the semifinals. Seniors Levi Joly (113 pounds) and Michael Meyerink (160) moved on with decision victories Friday, while sophomore Talon Seitz notched a second-period pin of his opponent.
"This is the second year in a row we've gone undefeated on opening night," Bluffton coach John Hollman said. "Hopefully, that bodes well. We've got three guys that are each one match away from a state final."
"I like all our matchups, I like the way we're wrestling," Hollman added. "We're peaking at the right time."
Never miss a local story.
Beaufort High's Jake Sharp (113 pounds) and Kentrell Seabrook (220) also advanced to the semifinals in Class 4-A with 5-1 decisions Friday. Seabrook, ranked second in the state by scmat.com, takes on Westside's Adarius Williams in the semis. Sharp, however, must knock off undefeated and top-ranked Zack Clary of Gaffney if he is to reach the finals.
Hilton Head Island High has a pair of wrestlers in championship contention in Class 3-A. Sophomore Martin Duane, ranked first at 182 pounds, will be going for his 50th win of the season in the semifinals after notching a quick pin over River Bluff's Hunter Forsythe in Friday's opening round. Junior Brock Massey advanced to the semis at 138, where he will take on Upper State champion Cole Anderson of Eastside, ranked No. 1.
Of Battery Creek's six state qualifiers, two won their opening matches Friday to stay alive for championships in Class 2-A/1-A. Junior Joseph Cuevas at 106 pounds and senior Isaiah Sloan at 182 both advanced to the semifinals with pins. Sloan was the state champ at 195 pounds last season.
Whale Branch's lone representative at the state tournament, senior heavyweight Max Ford, kept alive his shot at repeating as state champion with a technical fall over Brandon King of Powdersville, 22-7. Ford next will take on St. Josephs' Shane Lotts, who edged Battery Creek's Johnathan Wright in the first round.
Saturday's action starts at 9 a.m. at the Civic Center of Anderson. The finals will begin at 6 p.m.
