Bluffton wrestling coach John Hollman says there are two kinds of goals -- your bigger goals and your close-to-home goals.
If that's the case, then the Bobcats, ranked 11th in Class 4-A, took care of one of their close-to-home goals on Thursday night.
Bluffton went on the road and beat rival Hilton Head Island, 44-26, to give the Bobcats (37-9) a win over every team in the county.
"Your goal is always to win a state championship," Hollman said. "But if you don't win one, it's always nice to be able to stick your chest out and say that you were the best in your own backyard."
Hollman said wrestling well in Beaufort County is always an accomplishment.
"You can put this county up against any county in the state," Hollman said. "The talent this county puts out there, year in and year out, is impressive. We're definitely proud."
For the Seahawks, ranked 11th in Class 3-A, this was the last match before the first round of the playoffs Feb. 8 against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
"I'm tremendously happy with the way we wrestled tonight," Hilton Head High coach Mike Newton said, noting that nine of his 12 wrestlers Thursday were first- or second-year guys. "We fought hard."
Bluffton will host the Region 8-AAAA individual meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bluffton. It will be the Bobcats' final tune-up before their Feb. 8 playoff opener against Goose Creek at Lexington. Should it win, Bluffton would then immediately face top-seeded Lexington.
