The Battery Creek boys basketball team got its season started on a strong note, defeating Groves 53-43 to advance to the finals of the Battery Creek Classic.
Guard Devonte Wilson led the Dolphins with 18 points and added eight rebounds. Center Eric Freeman chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Battery Creek erased a 31-29 halftime deficit. The Dolphins' largest lead of the game was 13 points.
The Dolphins (1-0) will take on Cane Bay in Saturday night tournament final. Cane Bay defeated Whale Branch in the other first-round game.
Battery Creek 56, Groves 6: The Dolphins started off their season with a bang, rolling to a 50-point win in the first round of the Hargray Battery Creek Classic.
Battery Creek (1-0) jumped out to a 34-4 lead by halftime against the visitors from Savannah.
Daisja Cannon led the way with 15 points, while Taniqua Mungin added 12 and Elizabeth Ford had 10. Maty Deersman finished with eight points, Brianna Tolbert had five, Erica Alston scored four and Shanice Pusha had two.
The Dolphins will play Whale Branch at 6 p.m. Saturday in the championship game. Whale Branch defeated Wade Hampton in the other first-round game.
