Mark Clifford usually saves an hour or so on Saturdays for the fish.
But the Beaufort High School football coach had to shelve his weekly getaway this past weekend to prepare for the Eagles' short week. Beaufort High travels to Ashley Ridge on Thursday for a Region 8-AAAA game moved up for local television.
The Eagles (6-2, 1-1) will try to get back above .500 in region play after being shut out at Summerville in Week 8. Ashley Ridge (3-5, 1-1) is coming off a loss at Bluffton.
"We've done lot in two days," Clifford said Tuesday. "They're just as prepared as they normally are, I feel. So we'll see how they play."
Clifford said he created an extra period of practice this week to address offensive assignments and timing, areas where he said the Eagles struggled during the loss to the Green Wave.
Beaufort High's offense will look to get back on track against an Ashley Ridge team that didn't force a turnover at Bluffton High School last week. The Swamp Foxes have allowed 40 points or more four times this season.
Eagles coaches watched video from Ashley Ridge's loss to Bluffton and victories against Colleton County and West Florence.
"Formation-wise, nobody does what we do," Clifford said. "Still it was a good enough look to see what their base defense is."
Ashley Ridge running backs Woodrow Jones and Tyler Garland combined for 195 yards at Bluffton last week. Swamp Foxes receiver Donovan Thompson led the team with seven catches for 88 yards.
The Bobcats intercepted Ashley Ridge quarterback Chandler Avenel three times and recovered three Swamp Foxes' fumbles.
Clifford thinks the Eagles are over their second loss of the season.
"It makes you tighten up the ship a little bit," he said. "Those guys from Summerville were fast. I think we'll pick up the speed this week. It made us faster and made us run a little harder."
